Originally, the Navy had planned to phase out the Dreadnaught. Critics pointed out such flaws as slow speeds, weak shielding, inefficient power generators, low fire power, and high crew needs. Economics won out though, so far, as the Navy has found it more cost-effective to refit these ships than to build totally new vessels. After modifications the new and improved Imperial Dreadnaughts are formidable warships.

Perhaps the Dreadnaughts biggest drawback now is how crew-intensive the ships are. Standard operating procedure recommends an optimum crew that numbers over 16,000 personnel. The consumable supplies required to maintain such a crew takes up enormous cargo space. Most Imperial Dreadnaughts therefore got its hyperdrive upgraded, giving them increased performance to class two. This allows for more frequent victualing stops, and some of that old cargo space can now be converted for hangar use. Dreadnaughts typically carry a full squadron of TIE Series Fighters an 4 Light Transports.

Dreadnaughts perform a number of duties within the Empire. Some are used to maintain an Imperial presence in the Outer Rim Territories, as convoy escort vessels, and in the pacification of low technology worlds.

The Dreadnaughts are 600 meters long. They carry 10 Turbolaser Cannons, five facing starboard and five facing port. 20 Quad Turbolaser Cannons are distributed along the ship's forward and side arcs, with six facing front, and seven on each side. The ships' front and rear are guarded by five turbolaser batteries per facing.
