All Super-Heavy Command Star Destroyers, or SSD was and are being build by the starship manufacturors Loronar, Rendili StarDrive, Sienar Fleet Systems and Kuat Drive Yards according to the traditional angular dagger-like shape. Some designs are made for the building of only one single ship while other more successful designs, like the Executor Class, are being build in multiple numbers. The length of these enormous ships can vary between 2.5 km (which is the maximum length of a Heavy Class Ship before it becomes a Super-Heavy Class ship) and 17.6 km (which is the length of the Executor Class Command Ship, the largest SSD class ever buildt). The armament, shielding, hangar capacity and many other features of the diferent ships varies just as much as the lenghts, but mostly according to the individual craft's mission profiles and the given budget.

All Super Star Destroyers are in a sense more show-off ships and command centers of the Imperial Navy than actual warships. But mainly they boost the morale of all Imperial forces, while utterly terrifying the rebellious and un-pacified worlds it passes. The most known and most faimus SSD, the Executor, was completed not long after the Battle of Yavin and was the first of four Executor Class vessels to enter Imperial service before the Imperial victory at Hoth. The Executor was put under the direct command of Lord Darth Vader and was used as his flagship as he searched out the Rebels. The Executor was involved in several key engagements during the height of the Rebellion that included the Battle of Hoth and a skirmish over Coruscant during which Black Sun vessels were engaged with an Alliance fighter squadron.

The Executor was later deployed at Endor to guard the Imperial II Death Star during its final phases of construction. The mere sight of the Executor and another Death Star was supposed to be enough to deter any and all Rebel attacks as no force would stand the slightest chance against the Empire's most powerful weapons. Unfortunately for our Galactic Empire, and especially for the crew of the Executor, Alliance A-Wings were able to cowardly exploit a little design defect, leaving the bridge of the Executor completely unshielded long enough for a doomed A-Wing to crash into the main bridge and send the ship crashing into the surface of the Imperial II Death Star.

The bridge deflector defect was fixed in almost every other Executor Class ship in service within months of the Executor's demise by adding a third bridge generator that is out of the line of fire, keeping the bridge superstructure shielded even if the two main generators have been destroyed. A second defect exposed after the destruction of the Executor's bridge was also fixed. This defect was the centralization of controls on the SSD bridge (heroic engineering crews on the Executor tried to regain control of the vessel from remote terminals but were unable to do so before the ship collided with the Imperial II Death Star.)

Perhaps the most interesting tid-bit relating to the Executor Class Command Ships is the official length of the vessel. In an interesting and controversial move, Imperial Naval Command released a public announcement after the completion of the Executor that said, "the Executor Class battleship is more than five times the length of a standard Imperator Class Star Destroyer." This release was accurate and inaccurate at the same time. The release was correct in that it was more than five times the length of a standard ISD, but it also gave the impression that is was only five times the length of an ISD. The Rebels generally accepted the Executor to be approximately 8 kilometers in length for a short period until actually encountering an Executor Class Command Ship, sensor reports clearly showed the real length but the Alliance High Command kept it quiet for some time as to not frighten their own soldiers. It is to be said though, that numerus ships of other SSD designs been build and could resemble the Executor Class. The Super Class Star destroyers are 8 kilometers in lenght and resembles the Executor in apearence. A few 12.8 km long SSDs with similar apeerence has also been constructed.

By the first time that Grand Admiral Thrawn came to power, after returning from the Outer Rim Territories, the Empire had no more SSDs under its immediate command as many were destroyed by the Rebel Alliance before that point. But most were in the hands of various warlords that refused to align with Thrawn for any number of reasons. But now the governmental controlled Imperial Navy has again begun to construct several Super Star Destroyers for active service against the doomed Rebel scum.
