This experimental TIE is a very rare sight in Imperial Starfleet. The craft was produced in limited quantities and performed relatively well. But as a result of internal debates within Naval Command for and against using weapons improved with the enemy's designs, it was decided to stop production. On top of this, the TIE Hunter was not as economical to produce compared to other more successful TIE designs.

Originally commissioned by the Imperial Starfighter Corp defending the planet Fondor and its shipyards, the TIE Hunter was an experimental fighter that sacrificed armor and firepower for flight speed. The design of this new craft integrated the folding S-Foils design of an X-wing into the form of a TIE interceptor. When the S-Foils of the TIE Hunter were locked in attack position, the fighter's top speed was 115 MGLT. But the fighter's closed wing configuration, redirected all energy intended for the energy cannons. No weapons could be fired while the wings were in closed position. All available energy was transferred to the craft's advanced twin ion engines, thereby increasing the fighters max speed to 135 MGLT. The torpedo load coupled with high speed made it an effective assault fighter.

Some TIE Hunters still remain, but they are not currently patrolling around Fondor. Instead they have been moved to more remote areas of the galaxy, mostly protecting vital facilities or depots.
