Although sharing some basic components with the many TIE series fighters, the TIE Star Cruiser is of a totally different design. Basically the TIE Star Cruiser is a heavily armored craft with extremely powerful weapons. The Turbolaser cannon is capable of inflicting large amounts of damage and is mainly used to smash enemy installations or destroy entire columns of enemy troops. In space it is equally good at disabling enemy starships and destroying transports. The Thermal Detonator Launchers are similar to those of the TIE Bombers. The Detonators can be free dropped upon enemy ground targets from altitudes up to 2500 meters. They can also be used against space targets as they have a limited homing capability. TIE Star Cruisers are not shielded and do mostly rely on escorting TIE Fighters or Anti-Air land forces for protection. But if they are used properly the TIE Space Cruiser can swing the scales of the battlefield. However, due to their expense the Empire has fielded only very few of these vessels, much preferring to use cheaper more disposable equipment and vehicles.
