The TIE Avenger is one of the newest starfighters released by Sienar Advanced Projects Laboratories. This is a division of Sienar Fleet Systems that has created many of the TIE prototypes. They are also responsible for the release of very successful starfighters like the TIE/x series and many deferent models of the TIE Advanced.
In a very close cooperation with the Imperial Navy and the Imperial Research and Development Group, Sienar has now build the newest and final model in the TIE Advanced series. This new model has the TIE/x2 hull, uses the same engines as the TIE Defender and with a shield rating of 80 SBD it is truly a force to be reckoned with. The weapons complement is just as astonishing, and consists of 4 laser cannons and 8 wing mounted Proton Torpedo Launchers (1 warhead each). This is something not seen very often on TIE models, but they are very effective. The Torpedo Launchers can be loaded with advanced torpedoes and all 8 can be fire-linked. This makes the TIE Avenger not only an exceptional superiority fighter but also a deadly weapon against capital ships. The first time the TIE Avenger was tested in combat by the Imperial Navy, was against a rebel supply convoy escorted by several frigates and corvettes. During this battle a single Imperial ace test pilot was able to destroy a fully operational Rebel Nebulon-B Frigate single handed, after firing all of his torpedoes in his first attack-run. The price of this formidable fighter is approximate 1/4 million credits. It is more than the cost of the TIE Advanced but still cheaper than the TIE Defender models. Because of this notable price, Naval Command has decided not to purchase these craft in large quantities. After all - 4 TIE/ln fighters are still more efficient in most Naval operations, than one TIE Avenger.
In the long run, the TIE Avenger is to be purchased as the standard advanced fighter of the Imperial Navy. It will replace the TIE/x series, TIE Advanced and TIE Defender in many fleets and deep-space establishments. But this will be done over a longer period of time, as the older models will not be replaced as long as they are functional. But if you think you are one of the best of the best of the many TIE pilots in the Imperial Starfleet, you could maybe be flying this class of fighter in the near future. Only the Empires most talented TIE pilots will ever be given the opportunity to fly these expensive and exceptional craft.
