Code Cylinders practical function is to act as computerized permits and keys. They allow the user access to areas under his authority. They are mostly carried by officers of higher rank, as they have clearance to many sensitive or high security areas. The cylinders can also be inserted into the standard computer interfaces which are also used by astromech droids.
